How can I tell if a photo has been edited or Photoshopped?

Look for things that break the rules of the real world: shadows pointing different ways, straight lines that bend near a person's body, repeated patterns in crowds or clouds, cut-out edges around a person or object, and skin with no texture. Then search for the earliest copy of the photo, because the original often shows what changed.

Light and shadows

Everything lit by the same sun or lamp should cast shadows in the same direction, with the same softness. Check reflections too: windows, mirrors, sunglasses and the eyes themselves should reflect a scene that matches the rest of the picture.

Lines and backgrounds

Edges and texture

Zoom in on the full-size image. A pasted-in person or object often has a glowing halo, a too-sharp outline, or a different amount of blur and grain than everything around it. Skin with no pores at all, or one part of the picture that is far sharper than the rest, deserves a closer look.

Find the earliest version

Run a reverse image search (most major search engines let you search with a picture). Sort the results by date and open the oldest copies. An earlier, unedited version can settle the question in seconds and show exactly what was added or removed.

Edited is not the same as fake

Cropping, brightening and color correction are everyday edits and are perfectly honest. The question that matters is whether a change alters what the photo claims to show: who was there, what happened, or what something looks like.

How All Around REAL helps

All Around REAL is Your AI PI. A REAL QUICK image review screens one image for AI generation and manipulation and returns a plain written result with a REAL Check. Where we find signs of editing that are common and often innocent, the result says so. Send the original file rather than a screenshot. And if the photo is yours, the “Prove mine is REAL” lane gives you a dated, independent record to show on a listing, a portfolio or a profile.
