Are free AI image and voice detectors reliable?

Free detectors can be a helpful first look, and they can also be wrong, so treat any single score as a hint rather than a verdict. Before trusting one, check whether it explains its reasoning, gives the same answer twice, can say it cannot tell, and what it does with the file you upload.

What the research shows

Detection is hard even for the companies building AI. One leading AI company withdrew its own AI-writing classifier in July 2023 because of its low accuracy (Quartz). A Stanford study found seven writing detectors classified 61.22% of essays by non-native English speakers as AI-generated (Stanford HAI). Image and voice detection face the same moving target: each new generation of AI tools is built to look and sound more real.

Test a tool yourself

Read before you upload

Check the privacy terms. Does the service keep your file? Can it use your upload to train its own AI? Think twice before uploading private evidence, photos of your family, or confidential business documents to any site whose terms you have not read.

Use the best copy you have

Screenshots, screen recordings and forwarded files lose detail with every step, and any check is weaker on a weaker copy. Use the original file whenever you can.

When to step up

When money, a job, a grade, a legal dispute or a family member’s safety depends on the answer, you need more than a hint. You need an independent review and a record someone else can check.

How All Around REAL helps

All Around REAL is Your AI PI. Fixed rules in code compute every result, so the same evidence returns the same answer. You get the reasoning in plain English, a case record, and a REAL Check anyone you choose can verify. Your files are processed in an isolated environment and are never used to train or refine external generative models. For text, the REAL Forensic Lab offers a complimentary sweep of your text, one document per day, with nothing stored.
